Autopilot

We’ve done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

The controls are dark, save for the odd blinking green light here and there across the dash. Light-years of distant stars shimmer and flicker outside the double-shielded glass. Zoe wonders how many of those stars have planets terraformed for life, how many she’s been to, on how many—

“You ever wonder how many people on how many worlds out there have warrants for our arrest?” Wash grins at her and pinches the barest rim of flesh around her waist, startling her from her reverie.

She curls an arm around his shoulders and plants a kiss on his forehead just to watch it grow. He always knows how to shake the most maudlin moods. “One less than we’re gonna be caught on,” she says.

“One less than you’ve got bullets in your gun.” He says it irreverently, he says it like a prayer. He’s seen her kill and loves her anyway. Sometimes the universe is a mysterious place.

His lap is warm and their fuel cells are full and it’s a full sixteen hours ‘til they make landfall on Asteris II. Zoe is pretty sure she’s not the only one thinking what she’s thinking. She almost asks if that’s a drive shaft in his pocket or if he’s just happy to be flying.

But then, she already knows the answer to that one. Sometimes the universe isn’t mysterious at all.

“You get the autopilot working?” She asks, and if she winks while she’s speaking, she figures Inara isn’t here to correct her less-than-subtle seduction techniques anyway.

Wash grins. He flips a dial and switch or two, more than she can keep up with. She’s built as a wingman—made for a gunfight or tense negotiation, but she’s no pilot and freely told Mal as much when he suggested this little venture. In retrospect, it was a good thing he took on the wet-behind-the-ears flyboy who was a little too into his plastic dinosaur collection, though neither she nor Mal would ever have guessed it at the time. Back then, they just rolled their eyes and read his expression when they asked how he would outmaneuver an alliance cruiser…hypothetically.

When he answered the question before asking why, their decision was made.

When he accomplished exactly that, for the first time of many, Zoe kissed him on the cheek.

“Kaylee patched her up for us,” he says, still smiling the smile of a pilot who knows he has fifteen hours before anyone comes to bother him about arrival times and ground conditions.

“She knows her circuits,” Zoe replies. She stands and stretches, turning away from the windows and distant stars.

“Thank goodness for that.” He flips a final switch, and the dash is lit in just-as-incomprehensible an array of little green lights. But Wash seems satisfied, and spins his chair to face her, unbuttoning his trousers as he stands. Serenity carries them to the edges of the universe and back, but so do the people inside her. And it takes all those people to make her run.

But sometimes, Zoe thinks, as she wiggles out of her tough, leather vest, hoping that Mal doesn’t walk into the cockpit in the next ten—fifteen—minutes or so, it only takes the two of them.

I was all "ooh, Kris wrote a fic for someone, she's so cool" and then I was all "ooh! Wait. That's ME."

This is so tender and peaceful, and has that essence of being totally comfortable with each other that I love about those two. I couldn't have hoped for anything better. And that whole "one less" routine, you can just tell it's a well-worn piece of dialogue between them.
