So I don't think I mentioned last week that I removed a little tumor off of Henry's abdomen. Everyone told me I was being paranoid, that it hadn't grown in the months (about 5) since I found it, that it was probably a little lump of tissue, no big deal. Anyway, I just didn't like the look of it, I felt like cleaning his teeth, and since I'm the vet, I could knock out both birds with one stone.

Anyway, figuring my piece of mind was valuable, I sent it off to the lab to identify.

And it came back Grade II Mast Cell tumor.

Now, this isn't as bad as a grade III, and of the grade II's, it had a low mitotic index (rate of division), but I had minimal margins (only 2-3mm) so according to most of the literature out there, if I go back and take 10-20mm more tissue, this should be a done deal without going to radiation or chemotherapy.

I guess I'm glad I know?

Ack! *gives Henry a belly rub and you a glass of wine*

I'm glad you listened to your gut.

Heh, especially because it's on the side of his prepuce... so we're going to be taking a lot more of the skin around his man-parts. :P

Oh, wow. I'm so glad and relieved you caught it in time. Goes to show, always listen to your instincts.

A low mitotic index is promising, and extending the margins should take care of it, though you might want to monitor the local lymph nodes? (I'm not a vet, but I have a degree in cancer biology.) The lump itself hadn't grown, so that's good too. Hope Henry recovers quickly!

Yeah, if only I'd listened to them five months ago. But, yeah, the most recent literature I found has appropriate excision of low-mitotic (this was <1, though there were some multinucleate cells) as pretty much curative-- using that as a prognostic indicator because about80% of canine MCTs are grade II. So I'm pretty hopeful.

Oh man! It's good that you went ahead with the surgery despite advice to the contrary. I hope Henry will ultimately be cancer-free!

Hopefully tomorrow!
